meditation (revision)

we sit in silence as i count your breaths.
i cannot tell which sounds are yours
and which are from the traffic, rushing
like water, outside. your heartbeats fall
like Buddha’s footsteps on the gilded
ceiling of the village stupa, only a golden
deity could leave such circular marks,
spiraling out of the monk’s chanting.
their wordsongs echo the silk paintings
that have encrypted our destiny, to be
no more than this speck, and my
laughter follows the cadence of the
sunbeam through it, for nothing
matters save that suspension of dust.
