fancy dress

if i were to guess, i would say
it was the crowd made me dizzy
body heat and conversations, half-
felt congratulations, tinkling of ice
and soda atop hunter green napkins.
more likely it was the wine, white
chilled in the glasses, held by the stem
with a hand bejeweled in toasting.
midday, and i couldn’t help it
the glass seemed always too full.
