beach

i write you messages in places
i know you won’t read
a note on your back, a phrase
hidden behind this whisper
a poem on the inside lining
of your plaid shirt pocket

i spell your name in sand
and imprint in each grain
a part of you. your eyes
wash up on a pebble
glistening green in the salt,
your lips float away

there’s a code in the driftwood
i asked the worms to carve
wriggling their bodies
deep into the wet timber
but i’ve tossed the cipher
down to the ocean floor
